Recent activities of the Orographic Convection Working Group

Jun-Dec 2021 update

  • A paper on a convective initiation climatology for the TEAMx study region produced by the Orographic Convection WG has been submitted to Monthly Weather Review.

  • A model climatology (1981-2018) of the starting location of convection over the Alps based on AROME is in preparation.

  • A climatology of convective cells over the Trentino/Adige Valley region using TAASRAD radar (located near Bolzano) archives for approximately 10 years is in progress.

  • A climatology of convective cells over Austria using the Austrian radar composite and ALDIS cloud-to-ground lightning is in progress.

  • Design of a NWP model intercomparison study is underway (led by Yann Seity) and will focus on one week in August 2019.

  • A LES model intercomparison study is in progress (led by Dan Kirshbaum).

  • Issue of where to store model outputs for the intercomparison exercises.

  • Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) has obtained a small internal grant to fund an undergraduate student this year.

  • The ARM proposal led by Dan Kirshbaum will focus on Orographic Convection in the Monte Baldo region.
