Recent activities of the Mountain Climate Working Group

Jun-Dec 2021 update

  • A paper on ‘21st century Alpine climate change’ is in review in Climate Dynamics (Kotlarski et al.). The study exploits the EURO-CORDEX ensemble in order to provide a summary on projected 21st century climate change in the Alps. A second step is planned.

  • The CH202X project for new Swiss climate scenarios has been initiated. The existing CH2018 scenarios will be improved using additional products and CMIP6/IPCC AR6 evidence.

  • The EXCLAIM project, launched at ETH Zurich/C2SM will help prepare the ICON model for long-term climate integrations over the Alps.

  • CNRM has started working on the evaluation of CP-RCM output in mountainous areas, in particular with respect to the mountain snow cover.

  • A manuscript (from PhD student Diego Monteiro) is currently in revision, reporting on a study which compared high resolution climate model outputs (CNRM-AROME), with statistically adjusted (ADAMONT method) results and their coarser resolution parent RCM (CNRM-ALADIN), with a local reanalysis relevant to the French Alps (S2M). Further work is underway to evaluate snow-related variables for an ensemble of 10 high resolution climate model simulations produced within the EURO-CORDEX FPS-convection framework over the wider European Alps.

  • The next WG meeting will follow the draft Numerical Modelling Plan.
